Nikos Temponeras, 2010

 The project (on Nikos Temponeras) arose as part of a course in the department of Architecture at the University of Patras, Greece in collaboration with the students Ernestina Karystinneou Efthimiatou and Roula Kouvara.

About the project: The project has reference to the leftist teacher Nikos Temponeras who was murdered in the Greek city of Patras during the student protests of 1990-91. The project itself consists of two series of images, one including different stills of a school chair from the exact point of the murder scene in the 3rd High School of Patras taken from an archival video of the time and the other depicting different views of a similar school chair that was found still in use in the same school that Temponeras was murdered and photographed for the purpose of the particular project. 

About Nikos Temponeras: Tempomeras was a mathematician and leftist teacher and member of the Anti-imperialist labor front (EAM). His name became known throughout Greece when killed during the student protests of 1990-1991. He was killed in Patras on January 8, 1991 at the age of 38 years by the then chairman of the local right-wing youth organization (ONNED). Temponeras was fatally beaten with crowbar in the head during violent incidents in the occupied 3rd High School of Patras.

The 1991 high-school student movement was the most massive ever in Greece, involving about 1500 school occupations and demonstrations of hundreds of thousands of people. The murder of Nikos Temponeras by thugs of the ruling right-wing New Democracy party caused an almost general insurgency in all main Greek towns, with a 25,000 strong demonstration in Patras where Temponeras was killed, which was followed by the burning of the police station and the Town Hall. The same day in Athens four people died in a fire which occurred during a massive demonstration. The civil unrest stopped only after the minister of Education resigned.

Το project (για το Νίκο Τεμπονέρα) προέκυψε στο πλαίσιο ενός μαθήματος στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτονικής του Πανεπιστημίου της Πάτρας σε συνεργασία με τις φοιτήτριες Ερνεστίνα Καρυστιναίου Ευθυμιάτου και Ρούλα Κουβαρά.

 Σχετικά με project: Το project αναφέρεται στoν αριστερό καθηγητή Nίκο Τεμπονέρα, ο οποίος δολοφονήθηκε στην Πάτρα κατά τη διάρκεια των μαθητικών κινητοποιήσεων της περιόδου 1990-91. Το project αποτελείται από δύο σειρές φωτογραφιών, μία που περιλαμβάνει διαφορετικά καρέ μίας σχολικής καρέκλας από το ακριβές σημείο της δολοφονίας στο 3^ο Γυμνάσιο Πάτρας και τα οποία αποσπάστηκαν από ένα αρχειακό βίντεο της εποχής, και μία που απεικονίζει διαφορετικές όψεις μίας παρόμοιας σχολικής καρέκλας η οποία βρέθηκε ακόμη να χρησιμοποιείται στο ίδιο σχολείο στο οποίο δολοφονήθηκε ο Τεμπονέρας και φωτογραφήθηκε για τις ανάγκες του συγκεκριμένου project.

 Σχετικά με Νίκο Τεμπονέρα: Ο Νίκος Τεμπονέρας ήταν μαθηματικός και εκπαιδευτικός αριστερών πεποιθήσεων και στέλεχος του Εργατικού Αντιμπεριαλιστικού Μετώπου (ΕΑΜ). Το όνομά του έγινε γνωστό στο πανελλήνιο, όταν δολοφονήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια των μαθητικών κινητοποιήσεων της περιόδου 1990-91.

Ο Νίκος Τεμπονέρας ήταν ο πρώτος νεκρός στη διάρκεια των μαθητικών κινητοποιήσεων ενάντια στο νομοσχέδιο του τότε Υπουργού Παιδείας Βασίλειου Κοντογιαννόπουλου. Δολοφονήθηκε στην Πάτρα στις 8 Ιανουαρίου 1991 σε ηλικία 38 ετών από τον τότε πρόεδρο της ΟΝΝΕΔ Αχαΐας και δημοτικό σύμβουλο Ιωάννη Καλαμπόκα. Ο Καλαμπόκας χτύπησε θανάσιμα τον Τεμπονέρα με λοστό στο κεφάλι στη διάρκεια βίαιων επεισοδίων που σημειώθηκαν στο υπό κατάληψη 3ο Γυμνάσιο-Λύκειο Πάτρας. Η δολοφονία του Τεμπονέρα, η οποία συνέβη σε μία περίοδο οξείας πολιτικής αντιπαράθεσης, ξεσήκωσε κύμα διαδηλώσεων και διαμαρτυριών σε όλη την Ελλάδα. Την επαύριο της δολοφονίας του, ο υπουργός Παιδείας παραιτήθηκε και η πρόταση νόμου για τις μεταρρυθμίσεις στην παιδεία αποσύρθηκε. Ο Καλαμπόκας δικάστηκε στο Βόλο και καταδικάστηκε πρωτόδικα για φόνο εκ προμελέτης σε ισόβια δεσμά, ενώ αργότερα η ποινή του μειώθηκε. Αποφυλακίστηκε 3 χρόνια μετά την φυλάκισή του. Το 3^ο Γυμνάσιο Πάτρας, τόπος δολοφονίας του Τεμπονέρα, σήμερα φέρει το όνομά του.
